Timeless lessons…

I wrote this a while back but the lessons herein are timeless.

7 VITAL LESSONS I LEARNED.

I love Children. They are so pure, so innocent. They do and say things so innocently sometimes you wonder where they get their ‘wisdom’ from. I am particularly fascinated by my children. Watching them relate with each other and others often leaves me having a conversation with the Holy Spirit and pondering on life! Take this scenario that ensued between my then five year old daughter and her not yet 2 year old brother.

She was watching her favourite cartoon. He comes and taps her quietly. She ignores him. He starts to run round the sitting room, climbing the center table, obstructing her view and generally disturbing her while she was watching.

M: Pls stop running around, you are disturbing me.
(He goes and pulls her hair instead)
M: Stop it or I’ll spank you now.
(He runs circles around her, laughing in giggles)
M: Stop it now! I’m your senior sister. You have to listen to me!
(Followed by a spank on his ‘bumbum’)

And there was silence! My son stopped all his antics, looked at his sister’s face, realised she was veeery serious and he moved away…. quickly!

I watched this scene quietly and in awe and I have through meditation gleaned these 7 lessons from it:

1. In life the devil sneaks in because we are not watchful. He sees we are concentrating on life’s pleasures (watching cartoon) and we may have forgotten to be watchful. He pokes us with his finger (small trouble) to get your attention. We ignore it. John 10: 10a tells us “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy “

2. Because we are engrossed in the blessing from God we seem to be enjoying, we sometimes forget that there is still an enemy out there who will do anything to bring us down. He has tried one small trouble, next thing he does is to run around us with all sorts and manner of distraction. In Luke 22:46, Jesus asked his disciples “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”

3. When we see the devil troubling us and we do pray, it shouldn’t be feeble at first. “Stop, you are disturbing me” we say but without any form of seriousness. James 4:7b “Resist the devil and he will flee from you”. Resist means to fight back with all you’ve got.

4. When we begin to get irritated by his antics and we now up our prayers, he is still there sometimes, running around us. Why? We are yet to use our full-fledged authority. Proverbs 28:1b “But the righteous are bold as a lion”

5. When we recognize who we are in Christ Jesus, then we can say authoritatively “Get thee behind me satan, I am a child of the Most High God”. We can say “I have been given authority to trample upon snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy” Luke 10:19.

6. In using our authority, the devil HAS to LISTEN to us! It’s a done deal. There are no ways about it. Philippians 2:9-10 “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth” When a child of God speaks, the devil has to shudder, stop dead in his tracks and retract quickly, lest he be burnt!
And like my daughter said in a booming voice “I’m your senior sister, you have to listen!” you can show the devil who is BOSS!

Imagine all these lessons from just a short scene that played out. But the highlight for me was when my daughter went after her brother after scolding him, and hugged him. That showed the innocence of a child’s heart. Perhaps that is why Jesus said in Luke 18:17 “Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” Am I saying that we should go after the devil after exercising our authority? Of course not! I gleaned an entirely different lesson, the 7th and the most key to me:

7. Have the heart to forgive! Be like a child. Yes, people will step on your toes, yes offenses will come, but you have to learn to let go! Mark 11:25 “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses”. Forgiveness releases you, and releases all of your outstanding blessings that may have been hanging due to bitterness and resentment. You feel free, and have such joy that only you can describe. I know, because I’ve been there. That is perhaps a story for another day.

So there you have it – 7 vital lessons God showed me and I have in turn shared with you. Now you have no excuse. Look for yourself in any of the points, and like a wise one, go and do the needful.

The grace of God is available.
